BRIEF: Democrat's Satnan a finalist in opinion writing contest
Apr 29, 2012 (Menafn - The Sedalia Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --Democrat Editor Bob Satnan was a finalist Friday in the 2012 Great Plains Journalism Awards in Tulsa, Okla.
Satnan entered an editorial writing portfolio that included opinion pieces relating to last year's Sedalia City Council cell tower vote, the types of donations needed by Joplin in the wake of last year's tornado, and a look at how cheating corrupted a local fishing tournament.
The winner of the category was J.E. McReynolds, of the Oklahoma City Oklahoman.
Category judges noted: "A strong field of entries proves that editorial writing is alive and well in all markets. Submissions spanned a range of topics and communities, but all the honorees achieved the goal of making readers think. Excellent work."
"Being a finalist in a competition that spans eight states is an honor in itself. Then to have your work selected by a panel comprised of Pulitzer winners makes it even more gratifying," Satnan said. This is the second time in the past three years that Satnan has been a finalist in editorial writing.
The Great Plains Journalism Awards are presented by the Tulsa Press Club and Benevolent Association. The eight-state competition includes Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Iowa, North Dakota and South Dakota.
