Rescue groups to stage pet adoption
Aug 11, 2012 (Menafn - The Register-Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --Tractor Supply in Fairlea will be the site for a pet adoption, fundraising and awareness event staged by NWAL Herding Dog Rescue Inc., and other animal welfare organizations. The "Rally to Rescue" will be staged Aug. 18 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
While the Herding Dog Rescue group focuses on abandoned, abused or otherwise surrendered Shetland sheepdogs (Shelties), collies and related mixes, other pets will also be available for adoption at this event.
Tractor Supply team leader Michelle Vance notes that, in addition to matching up pets and potential adoptive families, the event will include drawings for store products as well as gift bags for those who adopt an animal at the event.
"We encourage people to bring their leashed pets with them to the store, so the pets can shop around too," Vance says. "We have everything you need for your pets, including dog food."
Those attending the pet rally can also register for a chance to win a pickup truck that is being raffled by Tractor Supply stores nationwide, according to Vance.
Karen Bordonaro, director of NWAL Herding Dog Rescue Inc., notes that smaller pet rescue organizations like the Monroe County Animal League and the Greenbrier Humane Society help place nearly half-a-million dogs and cats in homes each year across the United States.
Her organization, Bordonaro explains, was founded in 2003 in Alabama and is now based in West Virginia, taking in approximately 100-150 Shelties, collies and related mixes each year.
Herding Dog Rescue is not a "brick and mortar" shelter facility, according to the organization's website. Rather, it is a network of foster homes that are located in Alabama, Kentucky and West Virginia.
Speaking about the upcoming Aug. 18 rally in Fairlea, Bordonaro says, "Events like this provide us the opportunity to give deserving animals a new 'leash' on life. We are dedicated to making a difference and saving thousands of pets."
Other sponsors of the Fairlea event include Purina Pro Plan, Tractor Supply, Petfinder, Almost Home Golden Retriever Rescue and humane societies from Monroe, Summers, Pocahontas and Greenbrier counties.
Tractor Supply is located behind the Dollar General store in Fairlea, just across from Red Oaks Shopping Center.
