Blue Star Mothers, RSU Join Forces

CLAREMORE, Feb 20, 2013 (Menafn - Claremore Daily Progress - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --Rogers State University and the Blue Star Mothers held a Military and First Responders Appreciation Day during Saturday's basketball games at the Claremore Expo Center.

Tickets were free to all military members and law enforcement officers and their immediate families, while donations were collected for troops overseas.

"We had a great turnout with a large amount of items donated," said Blue Star Mothers Chapter 20 Vice President Danette Boston.

Boston, along with Claremore Chapter President Wanda Inman and other volunteers, helped put together the appreciation day.

Boston's son, a Marine, was overseas in Afghanistan last year and is currently stationed in South Carolina.

"There is still a war going on and conditions are not so great," she said.

"Troops rely heavily on the donations received, so we try to send care packages once a month."

Items accepted include non-perishables such as canned foods, chips, candy, water, gatorade, beef jerkey, female products, deodorant, tooth brushes, lip balm, cough drops, socks, foot powder, etc.

Rogers County Blue Star Mothers will be accepting donations Friday for Fill the Truck for Troops at Hillcrest Hospital Claremore, 1202 N. Muskogee Place.

Care packages will be sent out sometime in mid-March for the upcoming Easter holiday, said Boston.

The Claremore Chapter of Blue Star Mothers meets at 7 p.m. during the first Monday of each month at 518 North J.M. Davis Blvd.

Donated checks can be made out to Rogers County Blue Star Mothers Chapter 20.
