Star-studded weekend in city

Dec 07, 2012 (Menafn - The Commercial Appeal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --Memphis University School will play host to two of the top events on the high school calendar this weekend.

Saturday at 2:30 p.m., the top high school senior football players from around the area will take the field for the final time in the 11th annual AutoZone Liberty Bowl All-Star game. Ticket prices are 10 and the game will be broadcast on WHBQ-560 AM.

Several players who have already committed to Division 1 schools will be participating, including Darrius Sims and Gerald Perry (both Vanderbilt) of Class 6A state champion Whitehaven; Marcus Robinson (Arkansas), Christian Morris (UCLA) and Herbert Moore (Ole Miss) of East; Zach Collins (Memphis) and Mack Weaver (Vanderbilt) of Harding; White Station's Jason Carr (Tennessee); MUS' Ford Howell (Wake Forest); Central's Latevius Rayford (Vanderbilt); Ridgeway's Lenard Harden (Memphis) and Briarcrest's Thomas Farst (Memphis).

Two players injured during the season -- St. Benedict's Jordan Wilkins (Auburn) and Marquez Lanton (Arkansas State) of MAHS -- were named as honorary selections. Whitehaven running back Mark Dodson, who has committed to Ole Miss, told The Commercial Appeal Thursday that he will not play because of an ailing calf muscle.

East coach Marcus Wimberly will coach the Blue team while Chris Wiley of Arlington will lead the Red.

On Friday, the two-day Memphis vs. Atlanta Roundball Classic begins at MUS. The event, now in its fifth year, matches top teams from each area. The series is tied 2-2.

East takes on Columbia, Ga. at 6:30 p.m. in a matchup of state champs from last year, followed by Hamilton vs. Eagles Landing, Ga. at 8 p.m. and White Station taking on Martin Luther King at 9:30.

The first two games on Saturday will be played at Hutchison beginning at 2:30 p.m. The action returns to MUS for the night session at 6 p.m.
