Briefly: Oregon State suffered a tough loss to Alabama in Thursday night's 2K Sports Classic championship round opener. The Beavers came back from a 15-point hole to tie the Tide, but Rodney Cooper's corner three-pointer with 12.2 seconds left gave Alabama the 65-62 win. ... OSU guard Ahmad Starks, the star of the first two games (25.5 points per) had his hands full with Alabama's Trevor Lacey and finished with three points. He nearly doubled that total in the final seconds, but coach Craig Robinson called a timeout just before Starks launched a 25-footer that went in. ... Devon Collier vowed to bounce back from a scoreless game against New Mexico State on Sunday, and he did that, with a team-high 21 points off the bench. ... Eric Moreland did not miss a shot (2-2) for the second time in three games and has pushed his rebound average to 11.0 after grabbing 14 against the Tide. ... When Starks dribbled the ball off Moreland's foot in the closing seconds, the Beavers committed their 20th turnover; Alabama had eight. ... The Beavers will face a Purdue team that has to be feeling even worse about Thursday. A questionable flagrant foul in the final minute on D.J. Byrd allowed Villanova to force overtime. The Boilermakers had battled back from a 10-point, second-half deficit, then lost an eight-point lead in the final 1:14 of regulation before losing 89-81.
