Want to own GM CEO Dan Akerson's '58 Corvette? Here's how

Nov 20, 2012 (Menafn - Detroit Free Press - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --General Motors today released details for people interested in bidding on CEO Dan Akerson's 1958 Chevrolet Corvette, which will be auctioned off to help rehabilitate a Detroit neighborhood.

Akerson and his wife, Karin, announced in August that they would donate the vehicle to benefit Habitat for Humanity Detroit's efforts to improve the Morningside Commons neighborhood.

The auction, which will be conducted by the Barrett-Jackson Auction Company in Scottsdale, Ariz., will take place at 7:30 p.m. Jan. 18. For more information, call 480-421-6694 or visit www.barrett-jackson.com/scottsdale/2013/danakerson.

The hardtop convertible Regal Torquoise Corvette boasts a 245-horsepower V8 engine, dual headlamps and twin chrome trunk spears. It was one of 9,168 Corvettes for the 1958 model year.

The Akersons have taken a special interest in the rehabilitation of the neighborhood, which is located on the city's lower-east side. They donated 1 million in February to Habitat for Humanity Detroit's three-year project to build and upgrade houses there.

"The fact that Dan is giving up a car that I know must mean an awful lot to him is very humbling," said Vincent Tilford, executive director of Habitat for Humanity Detroit, in a statement. "For whoever buys this classic car, not only are they going to give it a new home, but they're also going to give new, better and healthier homes to families in this neighborhood -- and actually help rebuild an entire community."
