BRIEF: Rite Aid Customer Cut In Melee With Robber
HARTFORD, Dec 03, 2012 (Menafn - The Hartford Courant - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --A woman was slashed on the thigh with a box cutter as employees and customers tried to stop a robbery in Hartford.
A customer who helped a Rite Aid employee fight off a robber Sunday afternoon was slashed in the thigh with a box cutter, police said.
About 3:53 p.m. on Sunday, a man lunged forward over the counter and tried to grab the drawer when an employee of the Rite Aid Pharmacy at 315 Franklin Ave. opened the cash register, according to Hartford Police Sgt. Paul Cicero.
The employee grabbed the suspect and tried to hold him down while other people in the store tried to help, Cicero said.
During the scuffle, the robber pulled out a box cutter and hit a female customer in the right thigh, he said. Officers responded to the scene and broke up the fight.
Eliabner Mercedes-Maldonado, 38, of no certain address, was charged with first-degree criminal attempted robbery, second-degree criminal attempted larceny, first- and third-degree assault and first-degree criminal mischief.
The customer was treated for minor injuries and released.
Mercedes-Maldonado will appear at Hartford Superior Court on Monday. His bail has not yet been set, Vicero said.
