Man charged in 778 Sports Club shooting
Apr 14, 2012 (Menafn - Times-News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --A Burlington man was charged early Friday with shooting a man at 778 Sports Club on South Graham-Hopedale Road on Sunday.
Raphael Tomar Carter, 30, of Harvey's Drive, Burlington, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury and possession of a firearm by felon, according to a Burlington Police Department news release.
Carter was arrested at about 9:30 a.m. Friday and was placed in the Alamance County jail under 100,000 bond.
Police were called to 778 Sports Club at about 2:24 a.m. Sunday in reference to a disturbance. Before officers arrived, several people had heard gunshots in the area. When they arrived at the scene, they found Deron C. Wiley, 28, of Fisher Street, Burlington, on the ground in front of the business with a single gunshot wound.
Wiley was taken to UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill for treatment. Due to his condition, investigators had to wait several days before interviewing Wiley.
Carter's criminal record dates back to 1997. Carter was convicted of assault inflicting serious injury, assault with a deadly weapon, assault on a female, false imprisonment, misdemeanor breaking and entering, wanton injury to personal property, resisting an officer, driving while license revoked, violation of a protective order and speeding, according to the N.C. Department of Correction.
