Challenger 605 aircraft now approved for low visibility approaches to 100 feet with Rockwell Collins' HGS(TM) Enhanced Vision System

Oct 30, 2012 (Menafn - M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) --Rockwell Collins' Head-up Guidance System (HGS(TM)) with enhanced vision for Bombardier Challenger 605 aircraft is now approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for low visibility approaches to 100 feet.

"Challenger 605 aircraft operators who select the HGS enhanced vision combination now have a distinct operational advantage, in addition to enhanced safety and situational awareness HGS brings during all phases of flight," said Craig Olson, senior director, HGS for Rockwell Collins. "We continue to make great strides in flight deck technology that make it possible to arrive on time in difficult weather conditions."

The system, which had previously been FAA certified for situational awareness, achieved the new level of certification with the addition of the highest-resolution Enhanced Flight Vision System (EFVS) sensor in the marketplace.

When the runway environment is sensed and projected on Rockwell Collins' HGS, Challenger 605 aircraft operators can continue on final approach below minimums to 100 feet above ground level before needing a visual runway view with their naked eye.

Olson added, "This capability will result in fewer airport diversions, meaning fewer delays for business-related travel."

In addition to the increased operational benefit head-up enhanced vision provides, Rockwell Collins' HGS improves safety. A 2009 Flight Safety Foundation study concluded that HGS technology would have positively influenced the outcome of hundreds of accidents over a 12-year period. The study found that 38 percent of all accidents were likely or highly likely to have been prevented if the pilot had a HGS. The study also came to the conclusion that a staggering 69 percent of landing and takeoff accidents and 57 percent of loss of control could have been avoided if the pilot had used HGS.
