Dec 27, 2012 (Menafn - M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) --The NYK Group's top news stories for 2012 were as follows: Expanding Business Upstream April: The ultra-deepwater drillship Etesco Takatsugu J began operations in the Petrobras pre-salt oil field off Brazil. June: NYK announced its participation in the Wheatstone LNG project in Australia and became the first Japanese shipping company to participate in the LNG upstream business. A consortium of NYK, the Mitsubishi Corporation, and the Tokyo Electric Power Company Incorporated obtained equity interests in the project (gas fields:10%)(lng plant:8%) through a newly established special-purpose company named PE Wheatstone Pty. Ltd. (PEW). PEW will lift a volume of LNG in the project in proportion to its equity interest. Enhancing Optimal Operations of Containerships March: The G6 Alliance -- consisting of NYK, APL, Hapag-Lloyd, HMM, MOL, and OOCL -- was launched. The introduction on an onboard broadband system on all NYK containerships to reduce CO
2 emissions was announced. April: The IBIS (I nnovative B nker and I dle-time S aving) project was launched for optimal and economical ship operation. NYK aims to achieve optimal economic ship operations through this project by sharing information that includes weather and sea forecasts, sea-current data, ship-operation data (e.g., speed, engine performance), voyage plans, etc., between land and ships in real time. Building Next-generation PCTCs October: A plan was announced for the building of four post-Panamax pure car and truck carriers equipped with the latest energy-saving technology. Fuel performance is expected to improve by about 30 percent per unit. Supporting the Recovery from the Great East Japan Earthquake; Introducing Disaster Response Actions February: Shirakumo berthed at the port of Soma, the first coal carrier to do so since the quake. April--July, October--December: Volunteers from NYK Group continued to assist rebuilding efforts in Rikuzentakata city. A total of 300 NYK volunteers have now contributed over 1,000 days of their time to help in the recovery. May: NYK released its "Tsunami-Response Guidelines for Ships in Port," which were developed from the lessons learned from the tremendous tsunami damage. These guidelines were the first to ever be developed for Japan. July: New Pride , a bulk carrier operated by the NYK Global Bulk Corporation, called at the port of Ishinomaki, the first call by a vessel after the port's mechanical unloader was reinstalled and made operational. September: Inaba , a multipurpose heavy load carrier operated by NYK-Hinode Line Ltd., transported a self-propelled harbor crane to Ofunato, Japan, from Antwerp, Belgium, enabling the port to resume operations. November: NYK hosted a cruise on Asuka II to aid reconstruction of the area damaged by the quake. The bulk carrier Haramachi Maru resumed calling at the dedicated port for a thermal power station located in the town of Haramachi This was the first arrival of a coal carrier at the berth since the quake. Receiving Commendation for Its NYK-TDG Maritime Academy (NTMA) September: Commencement ceremonies were held for the 118 students comprising the second class graduating from NTMA, which was commended during the month as an excellent school by the Philippine-Japan Manning Consultative Council Inc. 2 emissions was confirmed to average 6 percent on Yamatai and Yamato , module carriers equipped with the world's first permanently installed air-lubrication system using an air blower. NYK took delivery of Soyo ,a coal carrier equipped with the world's first innovative air-lubrication system featuring a main-engine scavenging air bypass system. December: NYK received Japan's 2012 Minister of the Environment Award. March: NYK's Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) was the first in the world to be certified by ClassNK. NYK's certification recognizes that its SEEMP complies with guidelines adopted at the 63rd session of the International Maritime Organization's Marine Environment Protection Committee, which was held from February 27 to March 2, 2012. June: NYK was the first company in the shipping industry to be verified to be in compliance with GHG Protocol Scope 3.
