Raphiael Putney, Chaz Williams lift UMass
Jan 31, 2013 (Menafn - Boston Herald - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --Raphiael Putney scored 17 points and Chaz Williams made the game-winning layup with eight seconds left to help Massachusetts edge La Salle, 61-60, last night in Philadelphia.
Williams finished with six points, six assists and six rebounds for UMass (14-5, 4-2 Atlantic 10), which improved to 6-1 on the road. Maxie Esho chipped in 11 off the bench for the Minutemen. His dunk with 4:30 left to play put UMass ahead, 57-54.
Jerrell Wright and Ramon Galloway had 16 points apiece for La Salle (14-6, 4-3).
Vermont 49, Hartford 43 -- Brian Voelkel scored 12 points and the Catamounts (14-7, 7-2 America East) held off the Hawks (11-10, 4-4) in Hartford.
New Hampshire 57, Maine 54 -- Chandler Rhoads scored 18 points and the Wildcats (6-14, 2-6 America East) survived a comeback bid by the Black Bears (8-13, 3-5) in Orono, Maine.
UMass-Lowell 66, Saint Rose 64 -- Akeem Williams scored 19 points and Antonio Bivins (15 points) threw down a dunk with two seconds left to give the River Hawks (13-5, 9-5 Northeast-10) a win against the Golden Knights (10-8, 7-7) in Lowell.
WPI 66, Babson 43 -- Ryan Kolb led four players in double figures with 17 points on 7-of-10 shooting and the Engineers (20-0, 7-0 NEWMAC), ranked No. 4 in Division 3, remained perfect by routing the Beavers (11-10, 3-5) in Babson Park.
Springfield 58, Coast Guard 45 -- Alex Berthiaume scored 18 points, Robbie Burke added 12 points and nine rebounds and the Pride (15-6, 6-2 NEWMAC) tamed the Bears (1-17, 0-8) in New London, Conn.
MIT 70, Wheaton 57 -- Paul Dawson scored 14 points off the bench, Will Tashman added 13 points and nine rebounds and the Engineers (15-4, 6-2 NEWMAC) used a dominant first half to beat the Lyons (8-11, 1-7) at Rockwell Cage.
St. Joseph's (Maine) 63, Maine-Famington 55 -- Matthew Medeiros scored 22 points and the Monks (13-7) used a 40-22 edge in the second half to silence the Beavers (12-7) in a nonconference clash in Standish, Maine.

Michigan 68, Northwestern 46 -- In Ann Arbor, Mich., Trey Burke had 18 points and eight assists, and the Wolverines (20-1, 7-1 Big Ten) used a torrid start to rout the Wildcats (12-10, 3-6) in their first game as the No. 1 team in the nation.
Michigan made 10 of its first 11 shots and went the entire first half without a turnover. The Wolverines didn't commit a foul until the final minute of the half.
Indiana 97, Purdue 60 -- Cody Zeller scored 13 of his 19 points in the first half, Christian Watford added 17 points and the No. 3 Hoosiers (19-2, 7-1 Big Ten) prepared for Saturday night's showdown with Michigan by routing the Boilermakers (11-10, 4-4) in West Lafayette, Ind.
Florida 75, South Carolina 36 -- Kenny Boynton and Mike Rosario scored 15 points apiece and the No. 4 Gators (17-2, 7-0) dominated another SEC opponent in a drubbing of the Gamecocks (12-8, 2-5) in Gainesville, Fla.
Duke 75, Wake Forest 70 -- Mason Plumlee scored a career-high 32 points and the No. 5 Blue Devils (18-2, 5-2 ACC) held off the Demon Deacons (10-10, 3-5) in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Miami 73, Virginia Tech 64 -- In Blacksburg, Va., Shane Larkin scored 25 points and the No. 14 Hurricanes (16-3, 7-0 ACC) took command with a 13-2 second-half run, beating the Hokies (11-9, 2-5) for their eighth consecutive victory.
LSU 73, Missouri 70 -- Anthony Hickey scored 20 points and Andre Stringer (18) converted a key four-point play late in the game as LSU (11-7, 2-5) beat No. 17 Missouri (15-5, 4-3) in a battle of Tigers in Baton Rouge, La.
Kansas State 83, Texas 57 -- In Manhattan, Kan., Thomas Gipson had 17 points off the bench, Angel Rodriguez added 11 points and eight assists and the No. 18 Wildcats (16-4, 5-2 Big 12) crushed the Longhorns (9-11, 1-6).
Creighton 91, Missouri St. 77 -- Doug McDermott scored 29 points and made five of the team's 15 3-pointers as the No. 21 Bluejays (19-3, 8-2) moved into a tie for first place in the Missouri Valley Conference by beating the Bears (6-16, 4-6) in Omaha, Neb.

La Salle 68, UMass 57 -- Brittany Wilson was 14-of-14 from the free throw line and scored 30 points as the Explorers (7-13, 3-3 Atlantic 10) routed the Minutewomen (3-18, 1-5) at the Mullins Center.
Holy Cross 51, Army 46 -- Alex Smith scored 21 points including five 3-pointers and the Crusaders (10-11, 2-4 Patriot) upset the Black Knights (15-6, 4-2) in West Point, N.Y.
Babson 52, Wellesley 48 -- Sarah Collins (16 points, eight rebounds) made a clinching layup with 1:34 to play and the Beavers (18-2, 13-0 NEWMAC), ranked No. 22 in Division 3, edged the Blue (10-7, 9-4) in Wellesley.
