Kohl's, Northwestern Mutual announce superstorm Sandy relief donations to Red Cross
Nov 02, 2012 (Menafn - Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --Kohl's Corp. and Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Co. announced plans Thursday to help the American Red Cross in its Hurricane Sandy relief efforts.
Kohl's said it is donating 1 million in cash to the Red Cross for disaster relief on the East Coast. The Menomonee Falls-based retailer said it also is encouraging employees to volunteer to help in areas affected by the superstorm through its Associates in Action program. In recognition of volunteer hours, Kohl's will donate additional corporate grants to the nonprofit organizations being supported by Kohl's employees.
Northwestern Mutual said it will increase its giving to the Red Cross' disaster recovery effort. The Milwaukee-based insurer, through its foundation, announced a 100,000 grant to the Red Cross. It is challenging its 5,000 employees and 18,000 members of its network offices to match the gift dollar-for-dollar by donating through its Red Cross website.
The donation builds upon a two-year 500,000 Northwestern Mutual Foundation grant announced in July to strengthen the American Red Cross' Disaster Responder Program.
The company said more than 1 million of Northwestern Mutual's nearly 4 million policy owners live in states that were directly affected by Hurricane Sandy, including more than 375,000 clients in New York and New Jersey, the states hit hardest by the natural disaster.
Northwestern Mutual said it also is urging its employees to participate in the company's upcoming blood drives, helping to stem shortfalls caused by the storm-related cancellation of 100 planned Red Cross blood drives across the mid-Atlantic.
Also Thursday, Green Bay Packers defensive back Charles Woodson donated 100,000 to the Red Cross for storm relief efforts.
