Black Friday: Wave of evening openings moves calmly into midnight
Nov 23, 2012 (Menafn - The Oregonian - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --Lines are a quintessential part of Black Friday.
There are lines to get in. Lines to get certain items. Lines to pay. And, as shoppers at the Clackamas Town Center Sears awaited the mall's 11 p.m. opening (after hitting Sears' 8 p.m. sale), a line formed to get out of the store and into the mall.
"We've been so many lines tonight. We started at Target at 8 p.m., got to the mall at 11 and then sprinted over here," said Keylie LaVoie, 15, who was among the first in front of the young-person geared retailer Forever 21.
The mall's food court thumped with the sounds of a live DJ at 11, helping the place feel wide awake as the witching hour drew near.
LaVoie and a few of her friends were awaiting the store's midnight opening and then planned to power through the night.
Shelby Harrington, 15, of Milwaukie, planned to browse for herself and spend maybe 40 before heading to a babysitting job at 5 a.m. -- for a mom who's got her own Black Friday plans.
Indeed, many of the folks out in line across the Portland area were young, although the sexes changed based on the type of retailer. Young men dominated the line at the Best Buy on Southeast 82nd Avenue that wrapped around three sides of the building. Women and young families braved the cool but clear night outside the Walmart at Eastport Plaza.
