Star Scientific plans to introduce new face cream
Jul 19, 2012 (Menafn - Richmond Times-Dispatch - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --A local company best known as a maker of alternative tobacco products is getting into the face-cream business.
Henrico County-based Star Scientific Inc. said Wednesday that it plans to introduce a face cream that contains anatabine, an alkaloid found in plants such as tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, and tobacco.
According to Star Scientific, anatabine "has properties that improve the appearance of the skin."
Star Scientific's brands include two types of alternative, smokeless tobacco products. However, the company more recently has focused on dietary supplements.
Its Rock Creek Pharmaceuticals subsidiary has been researching anatabine and already has introduced to the market two dietary supplements containing the alkaloid under the brand names Anatabloc and CigRx.
Star Scientific said it has invested a year of product development in the cream, including consultation with dermatologists.
The face cream will be sold under the brand name Anatabloc Cream. The price is still being determined, a Star spokeswoman said.
The company plans to introduce the face cream by September. It will be available online through the company's website, www.anatabloc.com, and in select dermatology practices.
