PV church offers Holy Land connection
Feb 04, 2013 (Menafn - Pauls Valley Daily Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --EMANN@PVDEMOCRAT.COM -- Connecting to the word of God by visiting the places that inspired scripture is certainly a goal many would enjoy seeing through in churches across the country, though not always the most feasible trip.
However, parishioners of First Christian Church of Pauls Valley hope to soon offer the next best thing as they get set to host an interactive fundraiser known as the "Holy Land Journey," Saturday, Feb. 23.
An idea originally brought forward by current pastor Peggy D. Farris, it didn't take long for the congregation to get behind the idea for an event that promises everything from visual programs to an authentic Israeli meal.
"When they said they wanted to have it they wanted to share it," said Farris, who had first asked if the church wanted to learn more about the places of the Bible from her own journey in just a regular evening program.
"This is where the scriptures are talking about."
The program kicks off that evening at 5:30 p.m. in the fellowship area of the church at 300 North Ash and is an exciting opportunity for Farris, who has seen for herself the Holy Land and will include what it was like to walk in some of the same places where Jesus walked.
There will also be a silent auction and an opportunity where one can buy 1 chances for special prizes before the dinner using Jewish recipes is served by men and women dressed in that region's traditional clothing at 6 p.m.
Farris noted that while there will be things like a video presentation at 7:15 p.m. in the sanctuary, there will also be songs to sing as well and it will not be a slideshow of a vacation.
Helping round out the experience will also be other speakers like congregation member Terry Begley, who will share her experiences working with Muslim children over in the Middle East and a booth where people can learn about Hebrew art from Main Street Pauls Valley Director Samantha Robb.
In the end, Farris hopes those who attend will be able to develop their own more personal connection to the testaments of the Bible and then share them with others.
Anyone who wishes to come is invited since this does not focus on the particular ideas of any one denomination.
Yet, seating is limited for the event and any reservations will need to be made no later than Friday, Feb. 15.
Tickets, which can be purchased at the church during normal hours on Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m.-12 p.m. or from congregation members, will be 10 per adult for both the dinner and program, 7 per adult for just program and 5 for children ages 4-10.
"What I want is personal experiences and to help people connect it with what we read in scriptures," said Farris. "What we're going to work on is not just a travel log... It's going to have a rounded viewpoint."
