Warren Central, Franklin-Simpson girls open tourney with wins
Dec 28, 2012 (Menafn - Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --Five players scored in double figures as the Warren Central Lady Dragons beat Grayson County 65-60 in the Farmers National Bank Holiday Bash on Thursday at South Warren High School.
Warren Central built a double digit lead in the first half and cruised from there to improve to 4-7 on the season.
The Lady Dragons forced 35 turnovers, nine in a first quarter that saw WCHS build a 23-10 lead.
Warren Central led by as many as 16 in the first half, before Grayson County cut the deficit down to 34-23 at halftime.
The Lady Cougars scored the first bucket of the second half to make the score 34-25, but Warren Central scored seven straight to push the lead back to 16 points. The Lady Dragons would go on to lead by as many as 21 points in the second half.
Tia Barnett led Warren Central with 16 points.
Kiki Britt had 12 points, Angel Hill and Noochie Patterson had 10 points each, while Zakoria Hill finished with 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Franklin-Simpson 70, Edmonson County 52
Franklin used a balanced offense and timely defense to push past Edmonson County and snap a two-game skid.
Edmonson County used six straight points from Madison Rich to build a 13-7 lead late in the first quarter.
Franklin (10-2) stormed ahead, using defensive pressure to fuel the offense. FSHS used a 12-0 run to build a 23-16 lead midway through the period. Franklin then closed the half with 15-3 surge to take a 35-23 halftime lead.
Edmonson County (4-8) had as many field goal attempts as turnovers in the first half, 12. Franklin took advantage of the Edmonson County miscues, scoring 15 points off turnovers in the first two quarters.
Franklin's lead grew to 49-30 midway through the third period.
Edmonson County got the deficit down to 53-42 on a 3 from Hollie Glenn early in the fourth period, but couldn't get any closer.
Tasia Covington led Franklin with 21 points off the bench. Keely Morrow added 11 points, while Sydney Gooch and Jenna Curtis added 10 points each.
Rich led Edmonson County with 22 points.
Metcalfe County 59, Butler County 40
The Lady Hornets never trailed, cruising past the Lady Bears in the opening game of pool play for both teams.
Metcalfe County scored the first 11 points and built a 21-10 lead after the first quarter.
Butler County trimmed the deficit down to 23-17 after a 3 from Madeline Drake midway through the second quarter before the Lady Hornets closed the half with an 11-2 surge to take a 34-18 lead.
Metcalfe County led by as many as 21 points in the second half, with Butler County unable to get closer than 13.
Tayler McMurtrey led Metcalfe County with 22 points, while Jordan Samuels added 14 points.
Drake led Butler County with 15 points, while Katie Graham added 11 points.
Edmonson County 71, Green County 70
The Lady Cats rallied from a 41-32 halftime deficit to improve to 1-1 in pool play.
Rich led Edmonson County with 31 points. Hannah Jo Clemmons added 13 points, while Brandi Lindsey finished with 11 points.
