Construction has begun on a BJ's Wholesale Club on Glensford Drive
Sep 14, 2012 (Menafn - The Fayetteville Observer - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --Construction has started on a new BJ's Wholesale Club.
The New England-based company plans to build a 122,000-square-foot store on Glensford Drive, about two blocks south of Cross Creek Mall.
The city issued the building permit earlier this week for the estimated 4 million project, which will be built on between 12 and 13 acres at the intersection of Glensford Drive and Red Tip Road. The site on the permit is listed as 5200 Red Tip Road.
Earlier this year, C&S Commercial Properties submitted plans for the development to the city of Fayetteville. The firm's Carolyn Armstrong owns the land.
Butch Dunlap, vice president and broker-in-charge of C&S Commercial Properties, anticipates the store opening next year by late first quarter or early second quarter.
BJ's Wholesale Club operates as a members-only retailer similar to Sam's Club and Costco Wholesale. It sells everything from pet food to flat-screen televisions. Submitted plans include a tire center and gas pumps.
Construction Systems Inc. of Fayetteville is doing the on-site work.
Representatives with BJ's Wholesale Club did not respond to an email request for an interview.
As submitted to the city, the BJ's project would include an outparcel of 2.9 acres, which could be developed commercially. "We're negotiating some leases on those," said Dunlap, who declined to give names.
Another 11.5 acres along the same corridor remains available for commercial development.
Four years ago, the same property on Glensford Drive was the proposed site of an upscale shopping center called The Avenue. That project was shelved as the recession forced many national retailers to curb any plans for expansion.
C&S Commercial Properties and CBL & Associates Properties Inc., which owns and manages Cross Creek Mall, were partners on that planned venture, according to Dunlap. At the time, there was talk that a Fresh Market was being courted.
BJ's Wholesale Club, based in Westborough, Mass., operates 195 clubs and 107 gas stations in 15 states in the eastern U.S. The first club opened in 1984.
The retailer has eight locations in North Carolina, including two in Raleigh and one in Cary.
