Edgewood girls will take a win, pretty or not

Jan 26, 2013 (Menafn - Herald-Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --WEST TERRE HAUTE -- The shooting was awful. So was the rebounding.

But the perseverance was an attractive alternative and so was the final score as the Edgewood girls' basketball team got another big night from Vanessa Brown and went 20-of-29 at the line to hold off West Vigo, 40-33, in a Western Indiana Conference matchup Friday.

"We don't have many pretty wins anymore," Edgewood coach Gary Sims said. "We made some defensive plays when we needed to and took care of the basketball. We were shooting very poorly, but we hung in there."

The Mustangs (8-9, 3-3) picked up their first win in seven games dating back to Dec. 14 despite shooting 26.5 percent (including 2-of-17 from the arc) and getting killed on the glass by a 40-33 margin that included 16 on the offensive end by the taller, more physical Vikings (4-14, 1-5).

"I don't know what the problem is," Sims said. "We have not rebounded the basketball at all this year. Maybe it's our guards. We're not physical, either."

On the good side, Edgewood got 20 points and 12 rebounds from Brown, plus nine and five off the bench by freshman guard Deja Callahan. The Mustangs also had just three turnovers in the fourth quarter.

After turning a 14-7 deficit with five minutes left in the first half into a 16-14 lead in 2:30 behind six points from Brown, Edgewood never trailed. West Vigo tied it at 16 before the Mustangs went up 21-18 at the half.

Brown popped the hosts for nine points and four boards in the third as Edgewood went up 32-26.

West Vigo, which started 3-of-13 at the line, got within three points twice, the last 36-33 with 1:36 left after hitting five free throws in a row. But Brown converted a 1-and-1 at 1:51 and made 1 of 2 at 1:15.

The Mustangs got a stop on the other end and hit four of six at the line down the stretch, while holding the Vikings, who shot a miserable 23 percent (11-of-48), without a field goal in the last 2:54 and just one in the final 10:42.
