American Express to Use Binding Corporate Rules Across Its Operations Globally Next Year
Nov 28, 2012 (Menafn - M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) --In 2013 American Express will start using Binding Corporate Rules (BCRs) across all of its global entities. BCRs are a means by which organizations can transfer personal data internationally in compliance with European Union (EU) data protection legislation.
American Express' BCRs are a set of privacy principles, policies and procedures that govern the protection of personal data processed at its offices worldwide. These rules are binding across all American Express' global operations, demonstrating the company's commitment to strong privacy protection practices.
Acting as the lead regulator under the EU mutual recognition and cooperation procedures, the United Kingdom's Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) approved American Express' BCRs on October 29, 2012. American Express is currently seeking approval of its BCRs from other European Economic Area (EEA) data protection authorities.
The approval from the ICO will take effect on January 28, 2013. As American Express receives approvals from other European data protection regulators throughout 2013, it will begin using BCRs in other EEA markets.
"We commend American Express for its commitment to the concept of Binding Corporate Rules and for the respect for individual privacy that its BCRs demonstrate," said David Smith, deputy information commissioner, ICO. "The ICO welcomes approaches from multinational organizations that need to share personal information within their own group, but outside Europe, and who want to use binding corporate rules to enable that."
