BRIEF: Monticello nuclear plant's safety is subject of Tuesday meeting
MONTICELLO, Jul 07, 2012 (Menafn - St. Cloud Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission has scheduled a public meeting Tuesday to discuss the safety performance of the Monticello nuclear plant last year.
The NRC found that the Monticello plant, owned by Xcel Energy, operated safely in 2011.
The agency uses a color-coded inspection system starting with green and increasing to white, yellow and red to indicate safety problems. According to a letter from the NRC to Xcel in March, the Monticello plant's inspection findings during 2011 were determined to be green.
That means Monticello will continue to have normal inspections and will require no additional oversight by the NRC.
NRC officials are expected to discuss the plant's performance and the agency's reaction to the Fukushima Daiichi disaster in Japan, including increased inspections at U.S. nuclear plants.
The informal open house will be from 4-6 p.m. at the Monticello Library, 200 Sixth St. W, Monticello.
