: Alcatel-Lucent clears path for quick, cost-effective rollout of superfast broadband over existing copper lines with 'Zero Touch Vectoring'
Innovation enables service providers to introduce VDSL2 Vectoringtechnology to accelerate broadband speeds without the need to upgrade everyVDSL2 modem on their network
Oct 09, 2012 (Menafn - M2 PRESSWIRE via COMTEX) --Alcatel-Lucent (euronext and nyse:ALU) today announced an innovationthat allows communications service providers to use VDSL2 Vectoring tocost-effectively and efficiently boost broadband access speeds for customerswithout having to perform costly and time-consuming upgrades to existingtechnology in every home.
Alcatel-Lucent's innovation, called 'Zero Touch Vectoring', usessophisticated signal processing to automatically ensure that VDSL2 modemsalready installed in customers' homes can continue to run at full speed withoutundermining the service quality for customers subscribing to higher-speed VDSL2Vectoring. This eliminates the need to update the firmware on all modems on thenetwork, as was previously necessary.
VDSL2 Vectoring uses existing copper lines for the 'last mile' broadbandconnection to peoples' homes, providing a quick, cost-effective alternative tolarge-scale residential fiber optic build-outs. It removes the interferencebetween the VDSL2 lines in a bundle, enabling the delivery of speeds of 100megabits per second (Mbps).
Teresa Mastrangelo, Principal Analyst at Broadbandtrends, said: "For aservice provider, the ability to deliver higher-speed broadband over existinginfrastructure provides a time-to-market edge over the competition. Over thepast year, service provider interest in VDSL2 Vectoring has accelerated.Innovations like Zero Touch Vectoring remove the final hurdles to mass-marketadoption of VDSL2 Vectoring technology. It is good to see Alcatel-Lucent'sextensive field trial experience translates into features that will benefitevery operator."
Since announcing the industry's first commercial VDSL2 Vectoring solution inSeptember 2011, Alcatel-Lucent has been the only company to support extensivetrials and live commercial deployments of VDSL2 Vectoring technology. Thisearly experience has given the company unique insights into the operationalimplementation of VDSL2 Vectoring and has led to the development of newcapabilities. Beyond Zero Touch Vectoring, the company has pioneered techniquesto support up to 384 lines in VDSL2 Vectoring systems enabling rollouts inhigh-density areas, and is introducing advanced troubleshooting capabilities inthe Motive Network Analyzer to help ensure high-quality networkperformance.
Dave Geary, head of Alcatel-Lucent's Wireline activities, said: "Trials withleading service providers have shown that VDSL2 Vectoring can effectivelydeliver the kinds of speeds it promised, and we are now starting to engage inmass-market deployments. With our Zero-Touch Vectoring and other innovations weare eliminating the final barriers that service providers around the world havefaced -- enabling them to deliver higher bandwidths to more subscribers, now."
Alcatel-Lucent will be showcasing its VDSL2 Vectoring solution at BroadbandWorld Forum in Hall 11. Visit our website to learn more about how serviceproviders can 'Getto Fast, Faster' with VDSL2 Vectoring.
