Chronicle names Top Workplaces
Nov 09, 2012 (Menafn - Houston Chronicle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --Anadarko Petroleum Corp., David Weekley Homes and Energy XXI have taken the top spots in the Chronicle's third annual Top Workplaces rankings.
Those companies and others were honored Thursday at a dinner celebration at the Hilton Americas downtown.
On Sunday, the Chronicle publishes a special section highlighting Houston's top 150 workplaces based on employee surveys.
Winners are divided into three categories. Anadarko landed atop the large company list for the third time. David Weekley is the winner for midsize companies and Energy XXI for small.
Al Walker, CEO of Anadarko, said it was a "truly humbling honor" when he accepted the company's award for top workplace.
"But to win it three years in a row," he said, "is truly an honor."
John Buzga, career specialist at David Weekley Homes, said, "we're thrilled to be honored for something we take so seriously."
John Schiller Jr., chairman and CEO of Energy XXI, said he couldn't do it without all his employees.
"We dream big and we make big things happen," he said.
Dale Carman, founder and executive creative director of Reel FX Creative Studios, gave the keynote address.
"Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can," said Carman, who offered the audience what he called "my isms," or principles on which to live and work.
He encouraged the audience to visualize where they want to go and offered another one of his "isms."
"Begin with the end in mind," he said.
He added that a lack of resources, time or money are problems only if a company allows them to be.
Dallas-based Reel FX, which has an office in Santa Monica, Calif., specializes in digital visual effects and animation.
The Chronicle also singles out executives or companies for performance in special categories, ranging from leadership to ethics to communicating.
Greg Armstrong, chairman and CEO of Plains All American Pipeline, was honored Thursday night for leadership of a large company; Jeffery Hildebrand, chairman and CEO of Hilcorp, for leadership of a midsize company; and Schiller, with Energy XXI, for leadership of a small company.
More than 72,500 Houston-area employees weighed in with opinions in surveys done by Pennsylvania-based research firm Workplace Dynamics.
