BRIEF: Grant to TCC will fund firm's training

Nov 07, 2012 (Menafn - Fort Worth Star-Telegram - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --Weir SPM, a maker of heavy oil field pumps and related equipment with a large Tarrant County factory, will be able to train more than 300 workers using a 282,116 grant to Tarrant County College from the Texas Workforce Commission.

Weir, part of Scotland-based Weir Group, employs about 770 people at its plant at 7601 Wyatt Drive in White Settlement. The grant money, set to be awarded today, will be used to train 54 new hires and retrain 280 current workers.

Tracey Mellenthin, vice president of human resources, said that though the company laid off some workers this year, it is now replacing those who leave. At the start of the year, Weir reported that it had about 1,000 employees.

TCC said the grant will cover the costs of training in welding, logistics and programming computer-controlled machines.
