Junior Legion: Sobe-Toyota drops two
LONGVIEW, Jun 30, 2012 (Menafn - The Chronicle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --Chehalis Sobe-Toyota dropped its first two games of the Independence Day Tournament in Longview on Friday. The team couldn't get its bats going in a 3-1 loss to Aberdeen and an 8-5 setback against Longview Hamer Electric.
In the first game, pitcher Lane Wasson went deep into the game, struck out four and allowed just four hits in the 3-1 loss. Aberdeen took the 1-0 lead in the second before Sobe-Toyota tied things up in the fourth.
"Lane threw really well," Sobe-Toyota coach Tom Elder said. "He's the kind of guy that is going to go out there, he's going to throw strikes, he's going to be around the zone and he's going to give you innings."
Aberdeen scored 2 runs in the fifth. Despite having runners in scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings, Sobe-Toyota couldn't respond.
At the plate, Alex Cox and Logan James had a double while Shelby Spahr hit a single.
Sobe-Toyota dropped their second game against Hamer Electric, 8-5. Hamer collected 13 hits as a team and scored 7 runs in the first three innings. Sobe-Toyota scored 2 runs in the third and another in the fourth. A 2-run rally by the team fell short in the second loss.
"We were able to get eight walks in the second game but lacked that big hit to break through," Elder said.
Cox had a single and a double in the game while Brad Downs had a single and an RBI. Elder said he was impressed with the way Spahr performed as a relief pitcher.
"Shelby did a real nice job on the mound," Elder said. "He's had two really good outings for us coming out of the bullpen."
Sobe-Toyota (5-9) continues play in the Independence Day Tournament on Saturday in Kelso with a 3 p.m. game against the Kelso 15-year-old All-Stars and a 5:30 p.m. game against Competitive Athletics.
"We've got a group of guys that are good kids but we're still learning as a group and on the fly who's going to step into that leadership role and provide energy," Elder said.
