UAA women hang on against Regis

ANCHORAGE, Nov 18, 2012 (Menafn - Anchorage Daily News - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --Sasha King led the UAA women's basketball team in scoring for the second straight night, leading the Seawolves to a second straight nonconference win over Regis University, 70-67 Saturday at the Wells Fargo Sports Complex.

The Seawolves used turnovers to help create a 17-point halftime lead, but their lead steadily shrunk as Regis (0-2) outscored UAA (2-1) by 14 in the second half.

The victory was never truly in jeopardy, UAA coach Ryan McCarthy said, but the final margin shouldn't have been so narrow.

"We definitely got complacent in the second half," he said. "We showed our immaturity tonight, not giving as good an effort as we could have. As proud of them as I was in the first half, I'm equally disappointed with our effort in the second half."

King, a senior point guard whose 17 points included a game-high four 3-pointers, also handed out seven assists to help UAA put four players in double figures. Mariesha Harris scored 14, Alysa Horn notched 13 and Kylie Burns turned in a double-double with 11 points and a game-high 12 rebounds.

Fatigue may have been a factor in the second-half slump, McCarthy said

"Two games in two days is pretty tough, especially with the pace they are having to play at," he said. "A win's a win and I'd rather learn from a win than a loss."

Brandi Collins led Regis with a game-high 19 points and eight assists and Sarah Feeney pumped in 16 to go with 10 rebounds. Collins and Feeney also combined for 12 of the Rangers' 24 turnovers.

UAA turned the ball over just six times, less than half of what it had Friday. The solid ball control helped make up for 38 percent shooting. Regis shot 54.2 percent from the field, but attempted only 48 field goals to UAA's 71.

"We didn't have a great shooting night, but we did force them into 24 turnovers and so that's kind of our staple," McCarthy said.

Offensive rebounds also created extra shot opportunities for the Seawolves, who gathered 15 offensive boards despite being outrebounded 42-28.

No offensive rebounds were more crucial than the last two. After Collins made two free throws to pull Regis to within 67-64 with 1:41 remaining, Burns extended UAA's lead back to five when she turned a missed 3-point attempt from King into two points with a put back on the Seawolves' next possession.

Then, with 26 seconds left, Burns made the first of two free throws to put UAA up 70-64. She missed the second one but Horn got the rebound to keep the ball in UAA's hands.

Meghan Hollenga buried a 3-pointer for Regis with two seconds remaining to make it a three-point.
