UAE- Man posed as cop jailed for kidnap and rape bid

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)  A man who posed as a Criminal Investigation Department cop before kidnapping and imprisoning a woman in an attempt to rape her, has been sentenced to ten years in jail. The Abu Dhabi Criminal Court handed down the verdict to the Emirati man, but acquitted him of a charge of theft by force. The court also convicted another man involved in the same case for his role in trying to help his associate rape the woman, and ordered him to stay behind bars for three years, in addition to four more years in jail for taking drugs. It also sentenced him to six months in prison for stealing by force but he was acquitted of charges of posing as a policeman and abducting a woman. The court records show the main offender had intercepted the victim at a bus station claiming he was a CID official, and asked her to show her identification. The victim, in turn, requested him to produce his ID, which he showed her briefly before putting it back in his pocket. He told the woman she was under arrest and that police had been searching for her for two weeks. The man bundled her in a car, in which the second accused was in. They drove to a desert area and tried to rape her, but she resisted them, and their bid of sexual assault failed. The duo brought her back to the city and dumped her near a trade store on the side of the road. The Abu Dhabi Judicial Department warned people not to interact with any person who claimed as a police or security personnel until they produced evidence that confirmed their identity. "The procedures of arrest and search require a warrant from the public prosecution, though cases in which the alleged persons are caught in the act are excluded," the department said in a Press release. It also stated that each and every person had the right to know the identity of the officer, reason of the arrest or search and produce the arrest and search warrants issued by the public prosecution except in cases where culprits are caught in act.
