UAE- Driver tried to kidnap woman, court hears

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times)  A driver allegedly attempted to kidnap a housewife by grabbing her hand and trying to force her into his car, a court heard. According to prosecution records, the incident happened on December 11 last year when the Pakistani driver, 55, stopped for the housewife, a Sri Lankan, as she walked on Al Wasl Road and offered her a free ride. When she declined to ride with him, he stepped off and allegedly tried to force her into his car. But he failed as she screamed for help and he ran away. He has been charged with attempted kidnap in the Court of First Instance. The housewife, 33, said the defendant was driving slowly and following her around noon that day as she walked to a supermarket in Al Safa. "He drove by my side and asked me whether I wanted a ride anywhere and I said no." But the driver insisted and offered to give her a sum of money if she rode with him. She was further shocked and scared as he stopped his car, stepped off and grabbed her hand trying to force her into his car. She resisted and screamed for help. He had to let go of her hand but only after he spat on her face, she claimed in the investigation. He sped off as she saved his car plate number on her mobile phone. She called the police and later lodged a complaint at Bur Dubai police station. A police lieutenant said that they arrested the defendant the next day following the complaint. The driver alleged he stopped for the woman as she walked and offered her a ride to help her. But she yelled at him and spat on him and he spat back on her face. He denied having tried to kidnap her or grab her hand. The housewife pointed at him among other suspects at the police station.
