Aid urged for Myanmar Muslims


(MENAFN- Arab Times)  The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly MP Saleh Ashour has called on the government to dispatch humanitarian assistance to Muslims in the Republic of Myanmar since Kuwait has not sent any aid to these people who face hardships at the hands of the Buddhists. Speaking at a press conference, Ashour disclosed the committee members recently visited the Republic of Myanmar to assess the tragic incidents that have inflicted the Muslim minorities of this country. He said the committee met with State Minister of Foreign Affairs and State Minister of Housing and Social Affairs in Myanmar and discussed with the officials the importance of stability and protection the minorities. "They gave us a commitment to human rights and expressed their readiness to cooperate." He said the committee reminded officials that their country also has many communities in the Gulf countries and that they should protect Muslim minorities so that their citizens also are protected. He said Myanmar officials thanked United Arab Emirates (UAE) for the financial assistance of $5 million towards the storm that hit the country lately. He added the financial aid was passed through the Kuwaiti embassy in Myanmar because the UAE has no embassy in this country. He confirmed until now Muslims in Myanmar did not receive any help from the government of Kuwait or any of its charity organizations "so I call on the government of Kuwait to send assistance to these people," he added. He urged the Kuwaiti government to send financial aid to Myanmar to rebuild the mosques that were destroyed during the attacks especially that the month of Ramadan is approaching. He stressed on the need for Kuwait to play a role in protecting the Muslim minority. He noted that until now there is no office of (Organization of) Islamic Conference in Myanmar. Meanwhile, Chairman of Parliamentary Financial Committee Yousef Al-Zalzalah announced Monday that the committee approved a draft bill for the increment of children allowances from KD 50 to KD 75 for up to only seven children per couple at a cost of KD 725 million to be paid by the government to the Public Institute for Social Security. He said the committee also agreed to amend the 'Defaulters Fund' bill and on increasing the agricultural portfolio from KD 50 million to KD 100 million. He added the committee discussed the Kuwait Airways law and unanimously amended two articles of the law as requested by the government. He stressed the committee will submit its report in next session. He said the committee will discuss BOT law in its next meeting on Sunday. Member of the committee, MP Mohammed Al-Jabri explained the meeting was attended by Minister of Communications Salem Al-Othaina and representatives from the Kuwait Airways Corporation (KAC) and that the committee agreed to amend its final report on the KAC law. He added the financial issue has been removed from the report because the company has now been transformed into a private entity, stressing that the meeting agreed that the government through the Kuwait Investment Authority should finance the KAC and absorb the loses as stipulated in the emergency decree that was approved earlier. On another issue, MP Adel Al-Jarallah proposed on Monday the formation of an "authority for alternative energy" to study, plan and implement strategies for the use of alternative energy sources. He said the authority will aim to diversify the types of energy that can be used to generate electricity and water instead of relying on oil as the primary source for energy. This will also maintain oil reserves for a longer period, he added. On another note, a number of MPs called on the Ministry of Social Affairs and Labor Zhikra Al-Rashidi to reverse a recent decision to halt allowances to Kuwaiti women married to unemployed non-Kuwaitis. On his part, MP Mubarak Al-Orf said the Parliament's Health and Social Affairs Committee will reject the proposal to end gender segregation after it is referred to the panel by the Legal and Legislative Committee. He added the "the Public Authority for Applied Education and Training as well as Al-Shaddadiya University has insisted on segregation. Therefore, the panel will reject the anti-segregation law, especially in light of the "significant legislative disapproval." Meanwhile, MP Abdullah Al-Maayouf called on the government to double the food rations distributed to citizens during the holy month of Ramadan as well as increase the rations of other commodities that are in demand during the holy month. He also called on the state to require cooperative societies to give not less than 25 percent discount on basic commodities for citizens and expatriates.
