Kuwait- Diplomat raises concerns of Indians at Ministry talks

(MENAFN- Arab Times)   The Indian Deputy Chief of Mission Vidhu P. Nair today met with the Director of Consular Affairs at Kuwait's Ministry of Foreign Affairs to discuss the case of Indians who were arrested during the recent crackdown by the Kuwait government authorities on residence and labor law violations. According to Indian Embassy sources the meeting was held in a 'friendly atmosphere' and the Kuwaiti side has reportedly promised full cooperation. The meeting came on the heels of a peaceful 'demonstration' which was organized by hundreds of Indians in front of the Indian embassy and requests by Indian politicians to help those in need. The embassy sources said the ministry has promised to provide the embassy a full list of Indians who have been deported and those who are held at detention centers. The embassy has also requested the ministry to inform it immediately if and when any of its national is arrested to enable the embassy to provide consular services. Nair also apprised the Kuwaiti official of the hardships and inconvenience caused to Indians due to odd hours of 'raids' on their residences, particularly for people who hold valid documents. During the meeting, sources say, Nair raised the issue of cancellation of the driving licenses of some Indians as a result of which they have to face hardships and the official has promised to raise this issue with the concerned authorities. The Indian official has also requested the Director of the Consular Section of Kuwait's Ministry of Foreign Affairs to give a 'grace period' for the affected Indians to rectify their status and the official has promised to refer the issue to the Ministry of Interior. The embassy sources said Nair will also meet with the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Interior to highlight the plight of Indians particularly the plight of those who hold legal documents because the crackdown has caused them a lot of inconvenience and hardships.
