UAE- Three accused of smuggling 25kg drugs

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The RAK Criminal Court has finished hearing a case in which three residents, of different nationalities, are accused of smuggling and possessing 25kg of various narcotic substances. The court bench, comprising Presiding Judge Yusuf Rajab, Judge Hamada Abdul Karim and Judge Arif Humaidan, adjourned the case to June 19 to give its ruling. As per court records, the case came to light last year when the police's Anti-Narcotics Department was tipped off. A trap was laid and the contraband was found concealed in five bags in the car of one of the defendants, Asian. He tried to flee the scene on the Shaikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road at a very high speed putting the life of other road users at risk. However, the officers arrested all three defendants but they denied having any connection with the bags and the drugs. They claimed that someone abroad had asked them to hand the bags over to another person here against some money. The defence lawyer, claiming that the defendants were not aware of the contents of the bags, requested their exoneration and asked the court to amend the charges from smuggling and possessing narcotics into possessing drugs by mistake. As per the prosecution sheet, the bags seized contained 14kg of hashish, 1kg of opium, 2kg of heroin, along with wraps of hashish, and hundreds of Tramadol - all weighing 25kg
