Cold Winter Leads to Slow German Growth Rate

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) The German economy grew by a meagre 0.1 per cent during the first three months of the year after a pickup in private consumption failed to offset slumps in both corporate investment and the building sector, the government said Friday. "The German economy is slow in gaining momentum," the statistics office said, confirming first-quarter gross domestic product data it released last week," dpa reported. "One of the reasons for the small growth rate at the start of the year, however, was the extremely cold weather," it said. The cold resulted in a 2.1-per-cent fall in output in the construction industry. First-quarter trade also contracted with exports dropping by 1.8 per cent and imports falling 2.1 per cent.
