UAE- 50% of child abusers are close to victims' families: Official

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Fifty per cent of the molesters of children are family members or those close to their families, Major Arif Ali bin Shebu and Captain Nasser Abdul-Aziz Al Khajah from the Dubai Police's Criminal Investigation Department said in a lecture here on Tuesday. In the lecture on child abuse and molestation organised at the Emirates Association for Social Development (EASD) auditorium here, they said 10 per cent of the child molestation cases are committed by a person not known to the victim's family and 40 per cent of the victims do not know what molestation means. The lecture was attended by members of the board of directors of the EASD, represrntatives of government institutions and school students accompanied by their parents. They said the important factors that cause or lead to child abuse are the parents' failure to keep a watch on their wards, showing sex scenes in media, laying undue confidence in people close to the children like domestic helpers and relatives, not educating children about child abuse, and children's fear of reporting molestation incidents to parents. Lack of religious and moral restraint, and the family's fear of shame and scandal restricting them to report any such cases prompt a criminal to repeat his offence, they said. The lecture underscored that a child is prone to molestation from a young age of two years. Molesters, further, could be those who are entrusted with taking care of children such as the nanny, chauffeur, domestic servant, neighbours, juveniles and relatives. "Molestation of children is mostly accompanied by intimidation, solicitation, beating and physical attack," said the speakers. In child abuse cases, a molester often seduces a child in steps starting with fondling, offering bribes and through other seductive methods, they added.
