Two Asian men have been arrested while the police are still looking for other suspects, after two separate incidents in Liwa during which low and high voltage electric cables were stolen. Western Region Police Directorate Director Colonel Ojeil Al Junaibi said the gang members were specialists in cutting and stripping the plastic casing off the cables, in order to sell the copper wires as scrap in industrial areas. "The gang stole 610 metre-long power cables belonging to a government establishment in Liwa, out of which, 550-metre long high-voltage cables located in the vicinity of a farmhouse, and the remaining 60-metre low-voltage cable was stolen from another farm," he said. One of the arrested is an illegal resident, while the other is a truck driver, with the crimes being conducted at night. The men would climb the electrical poles before cutting the cables in a "professional manner", then cut the casing to get to the copper wires inside, he said. Colonel Al Junaibi said that confronted with evidence and proof, the results of investigation and the seized stolen items, the culprits confessed to having collaborated in forming a gang specialised in stealing electric power cables with the intention of selling them to scrap shops in industrial zones.
