UAE- Jail term for molesting maid upheld

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A 37-year-old worker has had his six-month jail term upheld by the Court of Appeal for molesting a housemaid after trespassing into the villa where she worked in Al Mamzar at night. The Court of Appeal also confirmed the deportation order against the Indian defendant. According to prosecution records, the case dates back to February 1 when the worker knocked on the villa's door and when the maid opened it for him, he barged in, hugged and groped her. He has been convicted of charges of molestation and trespassing into others' property. The housemaid, a Sri Lankan, said in the prosecution investigation that she did not know the defendant prior to the incident. The defendant came to her sponsor's house around 7.30pm. He asked about her employer but none was in the house except for her and another maid. He gave her a piece of paper on which was written a name and mobile number to give to her sponsor. As she was about to close the door he barged in the house yard and grabbed her by her abaya. She pushed him away and ran towards the maids' room, annexed to the villa. The accused chased and caught her. He hugged her from behind and groped her. She pushed him and took his hand off her and walked into the maids' room which she locked. The accused knocked on the door asking her to give him back the piece of paper he handed her earlier. He looked scared because his mobile number was written on the paper. The maid added that she could smell alcohol on the accused. Another maid, also Sri Lankan, confirmed that the complainant rushed into her room as she was running away from the accused on that day. The verdict can be appealed within 30 days at the Court of Cassation.
