Qatari Investments In UK Worth 20 Billion Pounds, Mayor of London Says


(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Qatari investments in the UK are worth 20 billion Pounds, ($30.6 billion), most of which are in London, Mayor of London Boris Johnson said Saturday. Johnson was speaking at a press conference in Doha said he was to present 18 new investment areas in London to those who are interested in investing in the English capital. Johnson said that the UK exports are worth over 1.3 billion pounds to the State of Qatar. He said that there were various opportunities for mutually-beneficial cooperation. He added that there were talks between the two countries over cooperating in a number of projects. He noted that the UK-Qatari bilateral relations were gaining momentum recently. He praised Qatari Diar's investment in the Olympic Village in London. The Mayor of London said that England, for its part, has its fair share of investments in the State of Qatar. An example of that would be England's investment in Shell Qatar, worth 22 billion pounds. On Qatari Diar's freezing of its Chelsea Barracks development project, the Mayor of London said he expected the project to go ahead soon. The Mayor of London Boris Johnson expressed his hope that the scope of bilateral cooperation would extend beyond trade relations to reach further cooperation in the education and cultural fields. On the possibility of having British universities being based in Qatar, Johnson confirmed that there was a strong desire by a number of British Universities to open up in Qatar. On future investments in the UK, the Mayor of London said that the UK was affected by the Euro debt crisis, he maintained however that the British economy had solid foundations. The real estate market remains very strong despite the crisis. Johnson stressed that he was a strong supporter of Qatari investments in the British infra-structure. He highlighted Qatar's investment in the Olympic Village and the IBC/MBC complex which covered news of the London Olympics. He said that the UK had a large number of investment opportunities in that sector. Johnson was heading a British trade delegation that was touring the GCC to attract investors to the UK.
