Brazil may impose USD25m fine on National Steelworks

(MENAFN) Brazil's environment minister, Carlos Minc, announced that a fine of up to USD25 million could be imposed on the National Steelworks Company due to environmental violations, reported Gulf News. Minc said that the steel firm had endangered people's lives and concealed information illegally. He added that National Steelworks must move nearly 750 people living near its plant in a Rio de Janeiro suburb right away, as the soil contains 90 times the legal limit of toxic and possibly carcinogenic substances like lead and cadmium. However, National Steelworks stated that the tests it conducted revealed there was no risk or immediate danger to the residents' health.
