(MENAFN) An Egyptian official announced that the country has resumed commercial flights to Iran after stopping them for 34 years following the Islamic Revolution in 1979, reported Reuters.
The airport official noted that a flight by Air Memphis, which is owned by Egyptian businessman Rami Lakah, departed Cairo to Tehran earlier on Saturday, with 8 Iranians on board.
The official also said that eventually, flights between the two cities could carry more tourists and cover business trips.
The two sides have consented in October 2010 to restart direct flights, however, no flights took place.
It is worth noting that diplomatic ties between Tehran and Cairo were cut in the aftermath of the Islamic revolution, as the Egyptian government gave sanctuary to the deposed shah, nevertheless, relations have enhanced over time, mainly since the election of Islamist Mohamed Mursi in June last year as president of Egypt.
