Kuwait- Import of rotten fish, meat, chicken widespread: report

(MENAFN- Arab Times) The import of spoilt foodstuffs to the country have almost become a daily affair, as we hear of chicken infected with Salmonella, rotten fish and meat unsuitable for human consumption, over and above the scandal of detecting components of pork or its derivatives in some products. The concerned authorities announced confiscating the contraband in large quantities without disclosing the names of their importers and dealers, reports Al-Seyassah daily. Many European countries have made a scandal of horse meat discovered in processed foods, which has shaken the thrones of major companies and sent their owners or those responsible to prison. Will Kuwait remain silent, especially after the Norwegian Food Safety Authority discovered pork in halal-labeled products? Kebab sold by Norwegian group Kuraas to restaurants contains about 5 to 30 percent pork, even though it is labeled as halal. "We will file a complaint against the producer," said Catherine Signe Svinland, an adviser at the food safety watchdog. "With halal product, there should be no pork at all and when we find such quantities ... we don't believe it's an accident but it is in fact fraud," she added. The Food and Safety Authority also said it found more than 60 percent pork in pizza meat sold by another Norwegian company. Halal chicken sausages served to pupils in central London schools and nurseries were found to contain traces of pork and the British concerned authorities withdrew all quantities of the products distributed and opened an investigation. The Municipality said it is in touch with the representatives of Muslim and Jewish communities. The question is "will the concerned authorities in Kuwait follow Norwegians and announce the names of companies involved in spoilt food or imported products containing pork and fat or it is taboo in a country of halal food?
