(MENAFN - Muscat Daily) Muscat Electricity Distribution Company (MEDC) has exhorted all business establishments and consumers in Muscat to observe Earth Hour. The power distribution company will observe Earth Hour on March 23 from 8.30pm to 9.30pm.

MEDC's head office and branches in six wilayats will observe Earth Hour as part of energy-saving campaign. Zahran Zahir al Ruqeishi, communication specialist at MEDC, said, ''The campaign reflects what we are doing for the cause of environment. ''Another campaign has been undertaken with the help of volunteers, who are spreading the message of energy-saving among consumers. This campaign began in Quriyat in July last year and it will soon be extended to Amerat.''

When asked about the lack of ratings for electric appliances sold in Muscat, he said, ''MEDC is very much for an energy-efficiency ratings for electric appliances. About the ways to reduce energy consumption in Oman, Ruqeishi said, ''Thermal insulation of walls and roofs should be made mandatory as this can reduce energy consumption to a great extent.''

He said that MEDC is an honorary sponsor of the annual Home Show, which is aimed at encouraging real estate developers to consider energy efficient architectures and using solar pa
