UAE- Maid attacks housewife with hammer, court hears

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) A housemaid, who beat her sponsor's wife with a hammer after learning that she wanted to cancel her residence visa, has been charged in the Court of First Instance with premeditated attempted murder. According to prosecution records, the 28-year-old maid, an Indonesian, waited until the housewife was alone sleeping in her bedroom to attack her with a hammer she brought from the kitchen. She beat her with the hammer on her head, face and other parts of her body. The housewife, a 33-year-old Jordanian, tried to protect herself and after being beaten up initially, she managed to snatch the hammer away from the maid and get out of her room. By then her husband came back and he kept the maid away from her while a neighbour called the ambulance and the police. The wife said in the investigation that the incident happened on November 19 last year. She had dressed up her three-and-half-year old son at about 7am to go to a nearby school and her husband dropped him. She then went back to bed and about five minutes later felt the presence of someone in her room. She was suddenly hit with a hammer on the left side of her head and she soon realised that it was the maid. She continued hitting her, but the housewife could not scream out loud as her jaw got broken. The maid also tried to strangle her. When her younger daughter woke up and entered the room, the complainant got scared for her. She then managed to snatch the hammer away from the maid. The complainant added that the maid had heard her and her husband talking about cancelling her residence visa and sending her back to her country and applying for a visa for a new maid. The husband, a 35-year-old Jordanian sales manager, said the maid attacked his wife because she was mad over her visa cancellation and she did not want to leave to her country. A Libyan neighbour said that she saw the complainant bleeding from her head and had scratches on her face. In their remarks, the Public Prosecution said that the defendant wanted to kill the housewife.
