UAE- Two maids charged with theft of cash, jewellery 

(MENAFN - Khaleej Times) Two Ethiopian housemaids have been charged with theft in the Court of First Instance. They are believed to have stolen more than Dh254,000 in cash from their employer and 164 gold jewellery items.

According to prosecution records, the two maids, aged 25 and 26, stole the money and the jewellery on January 15 from the sponsor's house in Al Qusais, to which the family had just moved in.

The complainant, a 53-year-old Emirati woman working as teacher, told the prosecution that they had moved in to their new house a few days prior to the theft. She put her three bags in the closet in her bedroom. She was busy after her grandmother died and so she did not take the cash to the bank or keep her jewellery at a safe place. On January 15, before leaving to work, she checked the bags in the closet.

When she wanted to take some money that same afternoon, she realised that the bags were missing. The police arrived and searched the house and found the missing jewellery and money in the maids' room stashed inside pillows. The maids had put the stolen items inside the pillows and sewed them back.

They admitted that they disposed of the bags and hid some of the stolen items in the storage room. They admitted in the investigation that they got the opportunity to steal when the complainant was away.
