Oman railway to create thousands of jobs


(MENAFN) The planned Oman's railway project, expected to be operational in 2017,will offer 70,000 jobs, Times of Oman reported. The USD6 billion railway scheme will cover more than 1,000km from the country's northern to southern borders. The paper added that the project will create investment opportunities in the country worth up to USD10 billion. The project will be developed in two stages of which the first stage will run from Khatman Malalah in Oman's north to the eastern town of Duqm, and will contain 20 train stations. The second stage will reach to the border with Yemen and will feature a further 20 stations. The Omani government has already received offers from 14 contractors to supervise the project, while authorities have also invited bids to build the railway. Project completion will form part of the GCC's 6,000km rail scheme, which at a cost of approximately USD100 billion is aimed at increasing trade within the six-member bloc.
