Saudi Arabia encourages new airlines with cheap fuel prices

(MENAFN) In its efforts to boost its open skies policy, the Saudi government has promised cheap jet fuel to foreign airlines setting up in its domestic market, Arab News reported. The paper quoted Prince Fahd bin Abdullah, president of the General Authority for Civil Aviation (GACA), as saying that all domestic operators will be given jet fuel at equal rates and the price will be much less than what is available in the neighbouring regions. Currently, Saudi Arabian Airlines and low-cost carrier nasair are the only players in the Saudi aviation market. A third operator, SAMA, went bankrupt in 2010 because of high fuel prices and caps on domestic ticket prices. Bahrain's Gulf Air and Qatar Airways were in December the first international airlines to be awarded licenses to operate services in the country.
