(MENAFN - Arab News) The Safety and Security Exhibition in Dammam was opened yesterday with a speech by Eastern Province Gov. Prince Saud bin Naif in which he commended the efforts and sacrifices of Civil Defense in ensuring the safety and security of citizens and residents. The four-day event is being organized with close and active cooperation from the Civil Defense Department.
The governor toured the exhibition, which counts more than 90 national and international companies as participants. On display are the latest in security and safety equipment, fire fighting technologies and information and traffic safety systems. Prince Saud said the government has provided Civil Defense with the most advanced facilities and equipment to carry out its mission effectively and successfully. "The needs of Civil Defense have always received top priority," he said.
The governor underscored the progress achieved by the Civil Defense Department as a result of the government's support. He emphasized the importance of mobilizing public support for Civil Defense.
"Communities can play a big role in preventing many dangerous situations before they actually take place," he said, urging all people in the region to make use of the department's comprehensive safety guidelines.
Director of the Civil Defense in the Eastern Province Maj. Gen. Abdullah bin Abdul Rahman Al-Khashman said the Civil Defense Department is a national agency responsible for leading the Kingdom's efforts to prepare for, prevent and respond to natural and man-made disasters.
"Our department is showcasing the latest, cutting-edge protective equipment in the vehicle demonstration area," he said, and noted that it was imperative for security organizations to stay abreast of the latest in technology. "The event has provided me with the opportunity to learn about the latest information in the field of safety and security as well as to network and exchange business-related information," said Hamed Al-Qahtani, a safety expert at a leading oil company.
A heightened awareness of safety and security issues has led the government and private sector to re-evaluate and upgrade security at all major sites. A sizable portion of the country's current fiscal surplus has been allocated to increase the security budgets for all government departments.
