Sharjah- Honest taxi driver returns Dh55,000

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The Sharjah Public Transport Corporation has recently honoured a Pakistani cabbie, working for Citi Taxi, for honestly returning Dh55,000 and important documents that a passenger had left behind. Abdullah Al Zari, Director-General of Sharjah Transport, on Tuesday said the honest cabbie, identified as Zabir Ayub Malik, discovered the briefcase with cash and IDs a week ago. "He immediately handed it over to his company whereas the passenger, also Pakistani, contacted the Sharjah Transport Call Centre (600545455) to report about his missing belongings." The passenger, however, failed to identify the taxi he was travelling in, in terms of its colour, registration number, the fare he paid or even the receipt. "Luckily, he forgot his money with an honest driver who returned it to his managers right away." Al Zari said that the passenger took the taxi from the Industrial Area heading to the Sharjah Islamic Bank, Abu Shagara branch to deposit the money, but left it behind: "Commuters are advised to pay attention to the colour of the taxi and driver's uniform as every company has a distinct colour. They should also keep the receipt of the tariff to better identify the taxi and find the items lost in a short time." In May last year, Sharjah Transport honoured a cabbie of the Etihad Taxi company for returning Dh16,000 and important documents to a passenger he ferried from the Abu Shagara area to the Sharjah Industrial Area around noon time last week. Honouring Malik with a cash prize, a valuable gift and an appreciation certificate, Al Zari said all cabbies are advised to follow this shining example of honesty: "Sharjah Transport, set to encourage drivers' good conduct, curb traffic violations and complaints, and boost customer satisfaction, has adopted an incentive scheme worth Dh100,000." In 2010 and 2011, three cabbies from Sharjah Taxi, Emirates Cab and Citi Taxi returned around Dh500,000 as well as other valuables and important documents they found in their cabs. By Ahmed Shaaban
