Swiss Nestle agrees to acquire Pamlab

(MENAFN) Swiss group Nestle, the world's largest food maker, is set to add US medical foods company Pamlab to its assets, as it seeks to strengthen its presence in the health and nutrition business, Reuters reported. Founded in 1987, Pamlab makes medical foods for patients with conditions including diabetic peripheral neuropathy, dementia, depression and high-risk pregnancy. Nestle Health Science, which was set up in 2011, aims to capitalize on the growing demand for medical foods from an ageing population. Luis Cantarell, head of Nestle Health Science, said the deal, subject to regulatory approval, will particularly strengthen the firm's brain health platform and provide an additional foothold in metabolic health in the US. Last year, Nestle bought a stake in US firm Accera, which makes a medical food brand for Alzheimer's patients. It has also acquired US firm Prometheus Laboratories, which makes tests and drugs for inflammatory bowel diseases, and UK-based CM&D Pharma Ltd, which makes a chewing gum for kidney patients.
