EU allows pig meat in fish feed 

(MENAFN - Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Under new EU rules, pork and chicken proteins can be used to feed fish from June, an EU spokesman announced here Monday.

"We do not use the term animal feed any longer. It was used in the 90s. What we speak are animal proteins.

Therefore pork and chicken remains which from June can be used to feed fish," Freedric Vincent, EU spokesman for health, told a press conference.

"We need to look at fish stocks which are dropping by using fish to feed fish. So animal proteins will be authorized provided they are produced from certain animals, chickens and pigs where there is no risk of any disease what we saw in the mad cow disease," he said.

"When it comes to labeling we will look into what it might consist in. Usually labeling is supposed to be informative. It says what animals it has been fed on," he added.

The spokesman was commenting on the issue if labels will clearly explain on what animal remains the fish have been fed.
