Secret of successful relationship retold

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) Want to know why it feels like men and women are from different planets? Just ask American author and "relationship guru" John Gray himself. For happier relationships, personally and professionally, Gray, who penned the New York Times number one bestseller from the last decade Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus, said couples needed to understand, respect and appreciate their differences. The author, who will speak at the Mall of the Emirates' theatre DUCTAC on February 28, has written several books on relationships. His 17 books have sold over 50 million copies in 50 different languages around the world. Gray will speak to couples about how the lack of communication between men and women stems from their inability to understand each other's language. In an e-mail interview with Khaleej Times, the author said that even though people and times had changed, the basic message in Mars and Venus holds good even today. Gray also counsels couples living in the UAE over the telephone. He added that sustaining passion and interest in a relationship requires a greater understanding and dramatic improvement in communication skills. "Today men are becoming more feminine and they are more aware about looking good and feeling good. My message is to encourage and support a woman in looking good and acknowledging her. It's true that people and times change, but the message in Men are from Mars holds good even today and has held good for thousands and thousands of years," said Gray. However, he added that in the last 20 years, relationships have become more complex because there are more women in the work place and when they come home, even though their expectations change in relationships, fundamental principles of relationships remain the same. "The book is not a how-to guide. It's a guide on how to understand the opposite sex and then it helps you make the appropriate natural decisions based upon knowing how to correctly appreciate your partner," added Gray. When asked if Gray would change anything about the book, he said: "I counselled people for 10 years before I wrote the book and it has saved hundreds of marriages and several thousand of people in my workshops. Again, there aren't any rules in my book, but there are insights and understandings that hold good even today," said Gray. The author said that the book is applicable for couples across the world, including those from South Asian or Middle Eastern cultures. "I receive letters all the time from people telling (me) how the book helped their marriage. I have travelled around the world and spoken to people in 50 different countries. Wherever I go, couples all relate to the material. Cultures are very different sometimes, but the basic interpretation of the book is almost exactly the same," he added.
