MQM no longer part of coalition, says Wassan

(MENAFN- Khaleej Times) The often turbulent relationship between the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) and the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) got a major jolt on Friday when Sind minister Mazoor Wassan declared that the MQM will not be part of coalition in future but sit on opposition benches. The latest so-called "differences" between the two coalition partners surfaced on Thursday when Sindh government decided to withdraw all cases registered against Lyari warlords and the MQM boycotted the assembly sessions on Thursday and Friday in protest. The last five years have seen a number of boycotts, resignations and protests against the PPP-led government of which MQM has been a coalition partner in Sind and at the centre. It is also a known fact that the MQM generally quits the government before elections for various reasons. Wassan, a former provincial home minister, declined to comment on cases lodged against Lyari Amn Committee members, a wing of the PPP, saying he was in Dubai when cases were registered. On the other hand, MQM leader Faisal Sabzwari on Friday lashed out at the PPP government and a few PPP politicians for backing Lyari's gangsters in exchange of few votes. "The notification is against Karachi, inhumane and illogical. The Sindh Assembly meeting cannot proceed in its presence," said Sabzwari referring to the letter asking for disposal of all cases against the Lyari-based People's Aman Committee presented in the Sindh Assembly on February 14. "The police have clearly stated that the old city area has become a no-go area as people of Lyari gangs rule over it and extortionists are present there in large numbers. Our boycott will continue until the notification is with drawn," he said.
