Russia Bans US Meat Import

(MENAFN- Qatar News Agency) Russia's ban on US meat import will come into effect on Monday, chief sanitary inspector Gennady Onishchenko said. In an interview with the Vesti v Subbotu with Sergei Brilyov on Rossiya 1 Channel, Onishchenko said the ban was conditioned following the US use of ractopamine. He also stressed that not only Russia refused to import American meat. "Such meat is not imported by over 160 countries," Onishchenko was reported as saying by Russian news agency Itar-tass. The chief sanitary inspector said Russian scientists "formulated 13 points of complaints of ractopamine. We'd like to have responses. Americans do not supply such meat to European countries". "We need proof that this medication is safe," he added. In his words, other countries are ready to supply meat to Russia that it needs. Among key suppliers, Onishchenko named South American countries â€" Brazil, Uruguay and Paraguay.
